Sterling silver solid Benedictine medal 26mm diameter, it comes boxed.

This medal features the design from 1880, which was to mark the 140th anniversary of the birth of St. Benedict, it was produces under the supervision of the monks of Montecassino, Italy and it was formally approved by Pope Benedict XIV.

On the face of the medal you will see a cross in Benedict's hand, the Christian symbol of salvation, and is his left his Rule for Monasteries. You may also notice a cup to his right - this was the poisoned cup which shattered when he made the sign of the cross over it. On his left is a raven, who is about to carry away the poisoned bread sent by a jealous enemy.
It is the survival of the attempt on his life that has lead to St. Benedict being the patron saint of kidney disease.

SMQLIVB - Sunt Mala QuaeLibas. Ipse Venena Bibas. - What you offer is evil. Drink the poison yourself.
PAX - Peace (Benedictine motto) or IHS may be found at the top of the cross.
