Christian families in Palestine have carved religious artefacts from olive wood for many generations.
Their workshops are situated in three towns to the south of Jerusalem - Bethlehem, Beit Sahour and Beit Jala.
Marie Wilkinson, our supplier, visits the towns and designs a collection of olive wood carvings, which Ampleforth are proud to retail.
Although it is not lawful to cut down olive trees, pruned branches may be used. These are dried naturally for several years in yards adjacent to the workshops.
Whilst some modern tools are used nowadays, the cutting, shaping and finishing of every piece is done by the hand of the craftsman.
